MASTERY in yoga shows as efficiency, ease, and clarity of intent.
The fruit is greater enjoyment and more profound benefits, all with
less expenditure of energy and time. This course will help participants
develop these qualities.
Each session will prepare for pranayama through the creative integration
of asana, karana, mudra, and kriya. The focus will be on skillful
and efficient action, doing no more than is necessary to establish
the structural and energetic container for pranayama and meditation,
which will then be explored in depth.
For Whom: Facility with digital pranayama,
mayurasana, and uddiyana bandha is required.
Drop-in policy: Sessions will build
upon each other, so taking the full course is recommended, however,
for those who cannot, single sessions may be attended at the drop-in
rate of $25/class.

Traditionally yoga asanas were taught through an individualized
approach adjusted to the unique needs of each student. This eliminates
unproductive activity by focusing the student on asanas that will
most quickly remove their obstructions. To support this, the teacher
provides one-to-one guidance and hands on adjustments through the
marma system. Due to this, all levels of students will progress
faster in an individualized course rather than in a group class.
Numbers will be limited and start times staggered (please download
the flyer for the start times). Mark will contact each student prior
to the first class to assign their asana(s). As progress is made,
each student’s practice will be evolved accordingly. Allow
about 1 to 1 1/2 hours for your session. Space is limited &
past courses have filled. Please register early to assure your spot..
Priority is given to those who register first and take multiple
sessions.
Who can attend: To qualify for these
courses knowledge of one of the Shadow Yoga preludes, or any of
the Beginners Series is required.

This course gives a basic grounding in the foundations of Hatha Yoga.
Participants learn a set sequence of stances, whole body exercises,
and dynamic movements practiced with rhythmic breathing. This preliminary
form is one of the Four
Foundation Series taught at Moksha Yoga Shala and is based in
vyayamas (preparatory exercises), which have the purpose of reducing
excess in the body and mind, while strengthening the muscular skeletal
structure and breath. This results in lightness, strength, stamina,
flexibility, and agility, all of which are prerequisite to the safe
and unobstructed learning of yoga asanas.
In this course students will be introduced to:
- uddiyana bandha
- ujjayi breathing
- the basics of integrating breath with movement
- the basic work of the legs, ankles, and feet as well as the
arms and hands.
Who can attend: This course is open to
new and continuing beginners. No prior Yoga experience is required.
The Four Beginners Series can be taken in any order. Combined, they
build a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Hatha and prepare
the student to progress to the Intermediate Level and learn the Three
Shadow Yoga Prelude Forms. Once any of the Beginners forms are learned,
the student is then eligible for the Individualized Asana Courses.
Drop-in policy: this course is only available
on a drop-in basis to those who have completed a prior Intro to Shadow
Yoga / Vyayamas course. Drop-in is fee is $16/class. Those on the
Monthly Unlimited Plan may also attend on a drop-in basis without
extra charge.

Nadi and Vayu are the sciences of the energetic corridors and vital
winds of the subtle body. Together with marma, these three form
the theoretical foundation which governs all the practices of Hatha
Yoga. For this reason an understanding of Nadi and Vayu is
fundamental to the skillful practice and teaching of Hatha Yoga.
This course will focus on the thirteen nadis considered important
for Hatha Yoga, and the ten vayus (vital winds). Each session will
include discussion of the material to be worked with, followed by
a guided practice to awaken an experiential understanding.
Emphasis will be placed on pranayama, bandha, mudra, kriya, and
methods of dharana (concentration). Asana will be worked with different
patterns of respiration and breath retention. In addition, students
will learn the signs and symptoms of imbalance in the vayus and
methods of practice to remedy them.
For Whom: This Special Focus Course
is designed for yoga teachers, aspiring teachers, and experienced
students. The hours can be applied towards the prerequisites for
the upcoming 2008 Advanced Studies / Teacher training program, or
towards continuing ed for graduates of prior trainings. All participants
should have good facility with uddiyana bandha, the primary asanas,
and pranayama.
Drop-in policy: It is recommended that
the entire course be taken, however, for those who cannot, drop-in
is available at $28/class.

In order to experience the powerful benefits of Hatha Yoga, a skillful
and disciplined practice must be integrated with positive life habits
supportive of the yogic path. Of primary importance is mitahara (the
controlled intake of right substance), shat karma (purification practices),
and the maintenance of the jatharagni (digestive fire). Any difficulty
in these areas will obstruct the path of Hatha Yoga and limit progress.
This workshop will explore these topics in a practical and accessible
way. Participants will gain essential knowledge and tools which can
be used to effect fundamental, life-enhancing changes leading to greater
health and vitality and a more profound and effective yoga practice.
Topics to be covered include:
- Mitahara, purification, and the cultivation of agni as the foundation
of yoga practice and the key to increased flexibility, strength,
and mental clarity.
- The practical application of yogic purification practices, including
ones to be done daily, and others to be done occasionally
- Cleanses for specific organs
- Use of supplements
- Moving towards a diet based on organic responsiveness and biological
need rather than emotional cravings and unconscious habits
Who can attend: All students, beginners
through advanced level will benefit, and are encouraged to attend.
This workshop is a prerequisite for the Advanced Studies / Teacher
Training Program to begin in September 2008.

A healthy pelvic floor is more than doing Kegals. Proper work of strengthening
and stabilizing the pelvic floor helps to create the correct foundation
of each movement in the body. It is a basic tool to avoid loss of
energy from this important area. A strong pelvic floor helps keep
the pelvic and abdominal organs healthy as we age.
The female pelvis and the pelvic muscles are an under appreciated
region of the anatomy. Important not only for sexuality, the pelvic
muscles are crucial for optimal functioning of the body. The pelvic
muscles begin at perineum and are a complex arrangement of muscles
that hold all of the lower organs. Heredity, life-style, and child
birth all have an effect on the perineum and the pelvic floor muscles.
Common problems that are related to the health of the pelvis are lumbar
spinal problems, sacroiliac, hip or sciatic pain, bladder weakness,
and digestive, menstrual and sexual difficulties. This area can be
too gripped, or too weak or both. You will learn how to distinguish
the three layers of the pelvic floor and how to soften and strengthen
these areas.
This workshop will begin with descriptions, drawings, hand-outs, and
identification of the pelvic floor muscles. What follows is a series
of specific exercises for self-discovery, and then specific poses
and exercises to increase the flexibility, strength, and coordination
of each of the pelvic functions.
Leslie Howard holds a 320-hour Advanced
Studies Certificate from Rodney Yee, a 300-hour teacher training certificate
with Tony Briggs, and a 500 hour Yoga Alliance certification. She
has been practicing for over fifteen years and teaching for fourteen.
She is currently apprenticing under Manouso Manos and Ramanand Patel.
Leslie also continues her studies of the Pelvic Floor with Susanne
Kemmerer.

Pranayama, or the regulation and extension of the life force via
the breath, is one of the most important practices of Hatha Yoga.
Careful and intelligent preparation is required in order to realize
benefits.
In this introductory course, each session will begin with a short
talk, followed by a condensed dynamic practice designed to “set-up”
the pranayama through the establishment of a good rhythm of breath
and freeing the power of the legs. The last 30 minutes will work
with the foundations of pranayama, with emphasis on forming the
right “container”, or seat, for the practice. In addition,
participants will work with and refine the 3 primary bandhas (mula,
uddiyana, and jalandhara), and learn a simple practice of Ujjayi
pranayama, done in both samavrtti (equal), and visamavrtti (unequal)
ratios.
This course is designed to compliment our Four
Foundation Series and prepare students to eventually progress into a
more demanding practice of digital pranayama.
Who can attend: all students with some
experience with the Foundations classes, and/or the Vyayamas, Pratigna,
or Shadow Yoga preludes may attend. Please talk with Mark if you
have any questions.
Drop-in policy: only students who have
successfully completed the Balakrama and Chaya Sanchalanama Shadow
Forms may drop-in to individual classes at the rate of $16/class
